There is a growing need for understanding not only food safety, but also food security.   According to the United Nations, over six million children worldwide died each year because of malnutrition and hunger-related diseases, with most of those children located in developing nations.  Developed  nations fare better, but still have almost 1 in 4 children classified as underweight.  In the US, we produce enough food annually to provide each person 4000 calories per day, yet there are an estimated 16 million children going hungry.  These statistics are staggering, and a need to bring more awareness of the concerns in an increasingly global food environment has driven UNTHSC to develop and offer this certificate program.

Additionally, there are many other issues associated with Food Security.  Problems such as overweight/obesity, food deserts, exposure to chemicals and biological agents through food, transportation, and the potential for large scale agroterrorism attacks are growing as the global community expands.  As such, this certificate program provides students the opportunity to become familiar with these issues, expand their ideas about public health, and gain an introductory level of knowledge that spans a broad spectrum of topics.

Who Should Attend?
The Graduate Certificate in Food Security and Public Health introduces participants to some foundational Public Health information (epidemiology, environmental and occupational health), and provides a broad base of information relevant to food safety and security through courses in zoonotic disease, global food issues, and food quality and safety. The certificate will introduce students outside of public health to the importance of population-focused solutions and collaborating across disciplines, and will provide an important additional credential to those students already working toward their MPH, DrPH, or degree in other related disciplines.  Students will focus on issues from the local levels up through and including global issues surrounding food safety, security, and sustainability.
