After a career that included playing professional football for seven seasons with the Houston Oilers and NFL Europe, Tony Newsom is now a detective with the Dallas Police Department (DPD).
A 19-year DPD veteran assigned to the department’s Sex Apprehension Program, he has conducted over 1,400 training and outreach presentations on topics like sex offender awareness, sexting, Internet safety, online predators, cyber bullying and the dangers of social media.
This spring, Detective Newsom visited the CPH to talk with graduate students in Dr. Melissa Oden’s human sexuality class regarding sexual victimization and “the selling of sex.” Dr. Oden teaches in the CPH Department of Behavioral and Community Health.
“I met Tony when we were both presenting at a Jewish Family Services Conference,” Dr. Oden notes. “He was speaking as an expert on a panel about kids and Internet safety, and after hearing him, I knew that he would be an excellent speaker for our class.”
In addition to his other duties, Detective Newsom is the Sex Offender Awareness Liaison between the DPD’s Youth Outreach Unit and the Dallas Independent School District.
