Dr. Wenshan Han

Assistant Professor, Population & Community Health

Education & Experience:
I earned my PhD and my Master of Science in Statistics from Florida State University, and my Bachelor of Science in Statistics from the Beijing Institute of Technology. Prior to joining UNTHSC at the conclusion of 2024, I was a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Arizona, College of Public Health.

Teaching Areas & Public Health Interests:
I currently teach Longitudinal Data Analysis and Intermediate Biostatistics, with my teaching focuses in statistical methods and application in biostatistics. Researcher Caroline Sinders said “There is nothing cold and mechanical about data. It’s all people, it’s all inherently human, so we have to treat data as a sensitive object, as a special kind of precious material.” There is always a story behind the data that goes far beyond the numbers we see. My hope is that my students can develop an interest in statistics and find it as exciting as I do!

As a teacher, I aim to create an environment where students are motivated to further their learning beyond. I incorporate group discussions and real-world examples into my curriculum to connect theoretical concepts with practical application. My hope is for students to acquire competitive skills in biostatistics for their future careers.

Professional Activities & Awards:
I am a member of the American Statistical Association, International Biometric Society – Eastern North American Region, and the American Medical Information Association (AMIA). My first-author paper received the Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Innovation Award from AMIA in 2024.

Scholarly Interests:
My research focuses on statistical methods in meta-analysis, regarding heterogeneity, publication bias and Bayesian methods. I am also interested in applying statistical methods to solve complex healthcare problems through professional collaborations.
