Dr. Uyen-Sa D. T. Nguyen
Associate Professor, Population & Community Health
Education & Experience:
I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Michigan, a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and a Doctor of Science degree in Epidemiology from the Boston University College of Public Health. I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Prior to joining the HSC College of Public Health, I was a faculty member in the Clinical Epidemiology Research and Training Unit at the Boston University School of Medicine, and the Department of Orthopedics and Physical Rehabilitation at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Teaching Areas & Public Health Interests:
At HSC, I teach Intermediate Epidemiology, Advanced Methods in Epidemiology I & II, Introduction to Data Management & Statistical Programming, Measurement Theory & Instrument Design. In addition, I have mentored MS, MPH, and PhD students in Epidemiology, as well as medical students.
Professional Activities & Awards:
I am an active member of the American College of Rheumatology, the Gerontological Society of America and the Society for Epidemiologic Research. I have served as a volunteer for several professional societies, reviewing abstracts for annual scientific meetings and serving on various committees and subcommittees, including annual scientific meeting planning committees.
Scholarly Interests:
I have experience conducting or collaborating on epidemiologic studies on topics ranging from perinatal to geriatric epidemiology, both within the U.S. and at international institutions. My current areas of research include examining pain, function, mental health, and quality of life associated with aging and chronic diseases. I also seek to understand social determinants of health and healthcare utilization in community-participatory research. My research focus also involves the application of advanced research and analytic methods to assess and control for selection bias and confounding, including the use of marginal structural models for causal mediation analysis, simultaneous multiple data imputation, and propensity methods.
