Dr. Kari Northeim
Assistant Professor, Department of Population & Community Health

Education & Experience:
I completed requirements for the PhD degree in Environmental Science from the University of North Texas-Denton. I also completed an MBA degree from Syracuse University and a BS degree in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University. Prior to joining the HSC College of Public Health in 2022, I held teaching positions at UNT-Denton in the departments of Biology, and Geography and the Environment. Before completing the PhD degree, I worked in the field as an engineer for over 10 years.
Teaching Areas & Public Health Interests:
I have been involved in the field of public health for more than nine years in the population-level impacts from air pollution, and health and geospatial science (GIS) research. In my current role at HSC, I am dedicated to equipping the next generation of healthcare providers with essential skills and knowledge. As the chair of Interprofessional Education (IPE), I lead the year-long training of graduate students across various health professions, including doctors, physician assistants, pharmacists, and public health leaders. Additionally, my participation in High Impact Educational Practices (HIEP) allows me to collaborate closely with the College of Public Health faculty in delivering high-quality educational experiences. My expertise in pedagogy and instructional design spans various formats, including online and in-person classes across multiple platforms. I currently teach classes including the Environmental Determinates of Health, Climate Change and Health, Food Security and Sustainability and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and Health.
Professional Activities & Awards:
I am a member of American Association of Geographers, Texas Education Agency, American Public Health Association, and the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health. I have served as an air quality advocate for Downwinders at Risk, focused on ozone air quality awareness. I am also a member of the Denton County Medical Reserve Corps and have been a big sister in Big Brothers Big Sisters since 2003.
Scholarly Interests:
My research interests include air pollution monitoring policy, geospatial information systems (GIS) analysis, health exposure assessments, environmental determinants, mental health, sustainability and pre-hospital care.
