Education & Experience:
I came to the United States after earning my BA and MA in Psychology from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. I then completed my PhD in Developmental Psychology at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. Before joining the HSC College of Public Health faculty in January 2018, I held faculty positions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2002–2006) and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (2006–2017).

Teaching Areas & Public Health Interests:
With over 30 years of experience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, I have designed and led courses on human development, adolescent and young adult health behavior, and applied statistical methods. Beyond teaching, I have mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, preparing them for successful careers in academia and industry.

Courses Taught at HSC:

  • BACH 5300 – Theoretical Foundations of Individual and Community Health
  • BACH 6318 – Scale Development Models
  • EPID 6391 – Advanced Topics in Epidemiology: Systematic Reviews
  • PHED 5340 & PHED 5350 – Scientific Writing I and II
  • BIOS 6391 – Advanced Topics in Biostatistics: Measurement
  • PHED 6118 – Methods for Public Health Studies II
  • PHED 6314 – Methods for Public Health Studies I

Professional Activities & Awards:
I have actively participated in several national organizations, including:

  • American Psychological Association (APA)
  • Association for Psychological Science (APS)
  • American Statistical Association (ASA)
  • Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA)
  • Society for Prevention Research (SPR)
  • American Public Health Association (APHA)

I have served on NIH and other federal grant review committees and contributed to national workshops. Additionally, I have been a member of editorial boards for multiple peer-reviewed journals and have reviewed manuscripts across various disciplines.

Scholarly Interests:
A central thrust of my research is advancing transparent and cumulative research practices through data science and open science approaches—ultimately accelerating innovation in public health research.

More specifically, my primary research area is alcohol epidemiology and prevention among young adults. I have conducted longitudinal, clinical, and experimental studies investigating alcohol misuse risk and consequences. My work on Project INTEGRATE (R01 AA019511 & K02 AA028630) has focused on evaluating and comparing brief alcohol interventions for young adults by synthesizing data from multiple studies, ensuring robust and reproducible inferences from large-scale datasets. Building on this work, my collaborative team launched Project FRESH (R01 AA028246) in 2021, a multi-site dissemination and implementation science initiative to refine existing alcohol intervention programming for scale and increase the adoption of improved and tailored interventions in real-world college campus settings. This work aligns with comparative (effectiveness) medicine, precision medicine, and implementation science. My work has influenced college alcohol programming, contributed to the retraction of a Cochrane systematic review, developed consensus among key stakeholders, and informed public policy.

I am also interested in advancing computational methods to derive clinical decisions, including data integration, harmonization, and synthesis. My research team has obtained funding to develop novel research methods and statistical tools to characterize alcohol misuse outcomes (R21 AI179404). My research aligns with the 4th Generation of Data Science (Jordan, 2023), advancing data science to support value-based decision-making in clinical and business settings. I have been honored with the K02 Career Development Award (K02 AA028630) and the R25 Research Education Grant Award (R25 DA061742), both data science grant awards.
