Abating Asthma
An innovative program led by UNT Health Science Center researcher, David Sterling, PhD, “Asthma 411” gives school nurses the equipment, training and medical clearance to treat students’ asthma attacks in the schools, methods to identify those that that may need improved management and asthma education, and links with community resources. This collaborative program includes Fort Worth ISD, Cook Children’s Medical Center, MedStar Mobile Healthcare, UNTHSC Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) and JPS Health Network, and is in the process of being adopted by more Tarrant County school districts. By treating asthma attacks at school and helping to improve asthma management, children stay in class, parents stay working and costly trips to emergency rooms are reduced or eliminated. This saves parents and children stress, saves the school revenue and at the same time saves our community healthcare dollars.
