He served as a patrol supervisor in Arlington’s busiest district and holds advanced certifications, including Master Peace Officer, Firearms Instructor and Mental Health Peace Officer. Oden holds an ACSM CPT certification and is a Precision Nutrition Coach. He also became a Certified Health and Wellbeing Coach as part of HSC’s MSLS program.
In 2018, Aaron became APD’s In-Service Training Sergeant, managing continuing education for 900 staff, chairing the Training Advisory Board, and leading wellness initiatives, including APD’s first on-duty fitness program. After a promotion to lieutenant in 2023, he now leads the Organizational Development Unit, overseeing wellness efforts and strategic initiatives. Outside work, Aaron is a dedicated husband, father, and community volunteer, passionate about wellness, sports, and quality time with loved ones.
He answered a few questions about his life during and after his time at UNTHSC.
Where were you born/raised?
I was born in Brooklyn, NY, but moved to DFW when I was about 5. I grew up in Arlington.
What are the most important things people should know about you?
I’d like for people to know that I am doing my best. I love my family, and I want to leave things better than I found them.
What sparked your interest in the MSLS program?
I spent quite a bit of time looking at options for my graduate degree. With an undergrad in technology, I needed a program that would consider my professional education and experience. The MSLS program was a perfect fit with a meaningful curriculum and the flexibility that I needed.
Can you briefly describe your career post HSC?
Since graduating, I’ve taken on a full-time role in establishing a wellness unit and programming for my agency. Independently, I’m working on my NBHWC.
What have been the most rewarding/challenging parts of your career?
For me, service to others is always rewarding. I don’t need recognition, but to see others thrive after overcoming challenges or crisis, there’s not a much better feeling to me. When I think about challenges, I think about the work it takes to debunk stigmas about healthy lifestyle habits for law enforcement and how to quantify the impact that preventative measures can have.
What were your biggest takeaways from HSC?
That there is an amazing community of forward-thinking health professionals out there in the world. There is still a lot of work to do, but the tide has already begun to turn.
Did you feel prepared for your career after graduating?
I was already in my career, but I definitely gained knowledge, perspective, and experience during my time at HSC. After graduation, I was much better prepared to move forward in the wellbeing space for law enforcement.
Is there a nugget or pearl of wisdom you learned at HSC that keeps unexpectedly popping up in your practice?
Less talking, more listening and reflecting.
What would you say if you could go back and speak to yourself prior to attending HSC?
“Aaron, give yourself some grace and be present. Without challenge, there is no change”
