2023 CHP Awards and Recognitions
Dr. Michael Furtado was recognized by the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions with its prestigious J. Warren Perry Award for his paper, “Assessment of Academic Resilience as a Non-Cognitive Variable in Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy Doctor of Physical Therapy Students.” This article was rated the top article in the Journal of Allied Health out of 46 by a panel of judges in 2022.
Dr. Jeegisha Kapila completed her Doctor of Philosophy in Rehabilitation Sciences in May 2023 at Texas Tech University. Her dissertation was titled “Immediate local fatigue effects on cervical muscle activity and proprioception in individuals with an individuals with and without neck pain history.”

Dr. Mindy Brummett completed her Doctor of Science in Rehabilitation Sciences in September 2023 at Texas Tech University. Her dissertation was titled “Recommendations for Social Media Use in Healthcare Education.” She was awarded the Adopt-a-Doc Scholarship from the American Physical Therapy Association Academy of Education in support of her work.
Research Update
The HSC Physical Health Biomechanics Research Lab is nearing completion. This research lab will support collaborative research projects in the department and across the institution using specialized equipment such as motion capture, force plates and more. The department is engaged in biomechanics, educational and translational research and is pursuing grant funding to support research questions in 2024.
