Savanna Smith, PhD candidate in the lab of Dr. Mark Cunningham, published her first first-author manuscript titled, “Placental ischemia during pregnancy induces hypertension, cerebral inflammation, and oxidative stress in dams postpartum” in Hypertension in Pregnancy.
Women who have had preeclampsia have an increased risk of developing high blood pressure again later in life. Based on the findings in this study, brain stress and inflammation may play a role in the return of high blood pressure a few years later. These results could help physicians improve postpartum care and encourage moms who have experienced preeclampsia to talk with their providers about their risk for high blood pressure.
