Percy Agogo-Mawuli successfully defends dissertation
April 25, 2025 • CBTS, P&N, Research, students
Big congrats to Percy Agogo-Mawuli for successfully defending his dissertation titled “Exploring mechanisms of an RGS12 variant: implications for bipolar disorder.” Percy completed the requirements for his PhD in Pharmacology and Neuroscience under the supervision of Dr. David Siderovski.
Percy’s research explores the effects of a genetic change in the RGS12 protein in patients with bipolar disorder. His results, which found that the change affects a critical region of the protein that plays an essential role in brain development and function, could be key to identifying objective biomarkers for accurate diagnosis and developing personalized therapies for bipolar disorder.
You can read more about Percy’s research in the recent first-author paper, “Molecular Modeling and In Vitro Functional Analysis of the RGS12 PDZ Domain Variant Associated with High-Penetrance Familial Bipolar Disorder,” published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences: https://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/25/21/11431
Percy has accepted a research fellow position at Mayo Clinic in Arizona where he will continue his work on drug target discovery. Interestingly, one of the projects he will work on at Mayo involves the RGS2 protein, which was first cloned by Dr. Siderovski in 1994.
