Percy Agogo-Mawuli, a PhD candidate in the College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, recently attended the Health AI Bias Summer School, Symposium and Datathon at Emory University School of Medicine. The week-long event brought together students, faculty and professionals from institutions like MIT and Brown University to collaborate on innovative ideas in health care AI.
“AI’s role in health care is expanding, and it’s crucial for biomedical researchers to address potential biases in these technologies,” Agogo-Mawuli said. “I was fortunate to receive sponsorship from the organizers for my participation in all three events.”
The symposium emphasized the importance of fairness in AI models to improve health outcomes, featured presentations from AI experts and culminated in a datathon competition. During the event, Agogo-Mawuli was part of a team that explored “Bias Detection in Deep Learning Triage of Chest X-rays: Addressing Underdiagnosis and Social Determinants.”
