Canvas Course Roles Policy

Canvas provides several different course roles to enroll authorized personnel into Canvas courses.
  • Teacher: the Teacher role is reserved for the instructor of record and/or authorized users who serve as course administrators.
  • TA: the TA role is assigned to authorized persons who assist the Teacher(s) with managing the course content and interacting with students, such as posting to the discussion board or grading student assignments.
  • TA (Limited): the TA (Limited) role is assigned to authorized persons who assist the instructor of record with only managing the course content; this role does not have access to the gradebook.
  • Designer: the Designer role is reserved for those who are assisting the Teacher with creating discussions, announcements, assignments, quizzes, or other course content. The Designer typically does not perform any teaching duties.
  • Observer: the Observer role has read-only access to course content and cannot interact with other people enrolled in the course.
