The HSC Center for Geriatrics is creating frequent newsletters  – The COVID Chronicles – to keep older adults and their loved-ones informed during the COVID-19 outbreak. Each edition, we will highlight helpful tips and resources to keep you up-to-date with the most current information. Virtual Town Hall: Addressing Current and Ongoing Issues Faced by Long Term Care Facilities

Recorded May 12, 2020 – In this Virtual Town Hall, we hear from experts in the field of geriatrics as they discuss the impact of COVID-19 and the current issues being faced within long-term care facilities. Topics included in this presentation include: Staffing Considerations, Patient Care Concerns, and Continued Precautions. Presented by HSC – Center for Geriatrics in collaboration with United Way of Tarrant County and Area Agency on Aging of North Central Texas.

COVID-19 Special Edition #1: March 18, 2020

In this first edition, we discuss how to get the most up-to-date and reliable information on COVID-19 and provide tips to protect yourself and those around you; including special considerations, such as persons with chronic conditions, and caregivers of persons with dementia. We also provide opportunities to get involved within your community by volunteering or donating to help older adults.

COVID-19 Special Edition #2: March 25, 2020

This second edition focuses on caregiver health with tips to stay well while staying home. Caregivers are provided with support services, tips for managing anxiety and stress, and guidance on sheltering in place. Also included in this edition: Senior Shopping Hours, Resources for Basic Necessities, and a look at the Center for Geriatrics House Calls Program – providing primary care services in the home.

COVID-19 Special Edition #3: April 1, 2020

The third edition takes a look at mental health during the COVID-19 crisis, with special considerations from the World Health Organization (WHO) for the general population, healthcare workers, caretakers, and people in isolation. This edition also provides an update to Senior Shopping Hours and Pharmacy Delivery Services, and we hear from our very own Drs. Janice Knebl and Sarah Ross as they address COVID-19 at nursing care facilities on the local news stations.

COVID-19 Special Edition #4: April 8, 2020

In the fourth edition, we dive into the world of telemedicine to answer some frequently asked questions and offer tips to have a successful virtual visit. We also introduce the Cheer Over Fear Initiative created by our Social Work Team to support our patients who need encouragement during this difficult time. COVID-19 Special Edition #5: April 16, 2020

For the fifth edition, we introduce various free video-conferencing platforms older adults (or anyone) can use to stay connected with loved ones. We also provide step-by-step instructions for making your own CDC recommended cloth face coverings, and link out to some great news articles about HSC and the community.

In the sixth edition, NP Kate Taylor discusses Advance Care Planning and why it is an important component of healthcare. We also provide tips to staying active and entertained while at home, featuring workout videos geared towards older adults and websites that provide wonderful virtual experiences anyone can enjoy.

COVID-19 Special Edition #7: April 29, 2020

The seventh edition introduces Texercise, a statewide health and wellness initiative of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) that encourages individuals and communities to adopt healthy lifestyle habits. We also highlight May as Older Americans Month and show how older adults can Make Your Mark in spirit of this years theme.

COVID-19 Special Edition #8: May 7, 2020

With the eighth edition, we provide a brief history of Older Americans Month and give advice on safe ways to celebrate any occasion this season. We also discuss the importance of continued health maintenance during a pandemic and how to co-exist with COVID-19 as we look towards the future.

COVID-19 Special Edition #9: May 29, 2020

In the ninth edition, we introduce the Texas Health and Human Services Age Well Live Well campaign, which highlights the importance of aging well and community preparedness. We also hear from Kathlene Camp, PT, DPT as she discusses bone health, in observance of National Osteoporosis Month, and provide resources for substance use treatment offerings and ways to stay connected.
