Summer Multicultural Advancement Research Training (SMART)

Smart

 

SMART, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, addresses the significant gap in the number of underrepresented minority groups, disadvantaged populations and individuals with disabilities that enter biomedical and behavioral science careers. This program will provide undergraduate students interested in pursuing biomedical sciences related research, a 10-week summer research experience in a mentor-guided laboratory and workshops to enhance their academic and career development.

Program Dates:

Start Date: May 10, 2022

End Date: July 15, 2022

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • Students completing freshman year and sophomore year students
  • 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average
  • U. S. Citizen or permanent residency
  • Major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry or other life science
  • Intention of pursuing education beyond the bachelor’s level

 Program Components

  • Faculty mentors
  • Ten-weeks of mentor-guided research
  • Mini-lecture series in Biomedical Sciences focus areas
  • Preparation for research
  • Research presentation skills
  • Library and electronic research techniques
  • Poster Presentation of Research at Program-end
  • Mentee Training and Networking through the National Research Mentoring Network

 

Summer Research Internship Scholar Support:

  • Stipend Allowance of approximately $4,000 (minus taxes)
  • Living Accommodations
  • Travel Allowance

Application Materials:

The following materials must be submitted by March 21, 2022:

  • Application
  • Transcripts (official) from all undergraduate institutions attended
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members
