Background

The bill commonly known as “campus carry” was passed by the Texas Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott in 2015. It permits concealed handgun licenses holders to carry their weapons on the campuses of all public universities in Texas.

The law also allows each university to develop policies that take into account the specific safety considerations of its campus. Under the leadership of President Michael R. Williams, a UNTHSC task force consulted with students, staff and faculty to develop a policy that makes sense for our campus. Everyone had an opportunity to offer input –through a survey that was emailed to the entire campus community and a series of four forums that took place in November 2015.

Our task force used your input to develop a policy and guidelines that meets the law and puts the safety of our students, faculty and staff first. The UNT System Board of Regents reviewed the policy and approved it in February 2016.
