On November 30, 2022, ChatGPT took the world by storm overnight. Was higher education prepared for the ready availability of AI-assisted student work? In this session, we will address the current capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT, describe its current use in the higher education landscape, and share some specific strategies for adapting your classes for the AI-powered era we have stepped into. Taking a balanced approach, we will explore ways to detect unauthorized use of AI as well as methods for integrating ChatGPT into your class activities and assessments for an enhanced learning experience.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the current prevalence of ChatGPT and AI assistance in higher education
  • Summarize the current capabilities of ChatGPT and what is on the near horizon.
  • Apply minimal adjustments to assessment strategies to make them ChatGPT-resistant.
  • Use ChatGPT to ethically enhance learning opportunities in your classes.
  • Formulate prompts to yield the best results when seeking assistance from ChatGPT.
  • Use tools designed to detect AI-generated writing.
  • Identify how unauthorized use of AI assistance is recognized in student academic integrity investigations at HSC.
