AHSE: Mastering Assessments: Balancing Formative and Summative Strategies
Educators will delve into the distinct roles of assessment for learning (formative assessment) and assessment of learning (summative assessment).
In a one-hour training session on types of assessments, educators will delve into the distinct roles of assessment for learning (formative assessment) and assessment of learning (summative assessment). The session will start with an introduction to the concepts and purposes of each assessment type. Participants will explore formative assessments, which are ongoing and provide feedback to enhance student learning and guide instructional adjustments. Examples such as quizzes, peer reviews, and interactive activities will be discussed. The session will then shift to summative assessments, which evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional period through exams, final projects, and standardized tests. Practical demonstrations and group activities will illustrate how to effectively implement and balance both types of assessments to foster a comprehensive understanding of student progress. The session will conclude with a Q&A to address specific challenges and strategies for integrating these assessments into various educational contexts.
Objectives:
- Identify the distinct roles and purposes of assessment for learning (formative) and assessment of learning (summative).
- Discuss various formative assessment methods, such as quizzes, peer reviews, and interactive activities, and how to use these tools to provide feedback and guide instructional adjustments.
- Determine strategies for implementing and balancing formative and summative assessments, using practical demonstrations and group activities to foster a comprehensive understanding of student progress.
Light refreshments will be served.
