Welcome

Welcome to the website designed to facilitate the development of the CEPH (Council on Education for Public Health) self-study document for the regular accreditation evaluation for the School of Public Health at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. The School of Public Health was first accredited by CEPH in 2002 for a full 5-year term, and is now one of only 37 accredited schools of this type in the US.

The self-study will provide an in-depth, analytical review of the SPH that will be used as a key component of this evaluation process. The content, criteria and format of the self-study are dictated by CEPH, and are provided on-line for those who are interested (www.ceph.org). CEPH is an independent organization that is recognized by the U. S. Department of Education to accredit graduate schools and programs in public health.

This website is intended to serve as a resource to all those individuals - faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni and community partners - who will be participating in the development of the self-study document. This website will be authored by a core group of faculty and staff in the SPH with the input of many other stakeholders. If you have any questions or comments about the self-study process, please contact Dr. Tim Strawderman, Assistant Dean for Planning and Administration in the SPH at (817) 735-0322 (tstrawde@hsc.unt.edu).

Purpose of Accreditation

Accreditation allows colleges and schools the unique opportunity to evaluate themselves, both by looking inwards and by seeking external review of their programs and operations. It is a voluntary process which is initiated by the schools in order to determine whether we are meeting our mission, maintaining or exceeding our standards, and serving our constituents effectively. More importantly, it can demonstrate the value of our programs and therefore imbue public confidence in our school and its mission.

As noted on the CEPH website, the Council's focus is "the improvement of health through the assurance of professional personnel who are able to identify, prevent and solve community health problems. The Council's objectives are: 1) to promote quality in public health education through a continuing process of self-evaluation by the schools and programs that seek accreditation; 2) to assure the public that institutions offering graduate instruction in public health have been evaluated and judged to meet standards essential for the conduct of such educational programs; and 3) to encourage - through periodic review, consultation, research, publications, and other means - improvements in the quality of education for public health."
