Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
As senior fiscal officer, John Harman is responsible for all aspects of financial operations at UNTHSC and the clinical enterprise, with annual budget responsibility approaching $260 million. He provides leadership, expertise, direction and oversight of financial accounting and reporting, budgeting and forecasting, financial planning and policy analysis, debt and investment analysis, cash-flow management, contract administration, business analysis, contract operations and business development.
Harman works closely with the University President and other executive leaders in driving the strategic direction of the organization. He is treasurer and ex-officio member of the UNT Health Board of Directors and serves on numerous institutional and UNT System committees. Harman collaborates with colleagues at the UNT System and peer-affiliated institutions. He also has an adjunct Associate Professor appointment in the Department of Health Management and Policy in the School of Public Health.
Prior to joining UNTHSC in 2006, Harman served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at West Virginia University’s clinical enterprise at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center and as Executive Director for Finance and Administration with the Department of Family Medicine at James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. Harman also has been a university auditor, but his professional career began with Medical Services of America Inc., where he was Director of Administration and Marketing for the Urgent Care Clinics division.
Harman holds active CPA licenses in Tennessee and Texas and has achieved the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation. He earned a BBA with a major in Accountancy and an MBA with an emphasis in Finance from East Tennessee State University and holds a certification as a medical practice executive (CMPE) from the American College of Medical Practice Executives.
Professional memberships and affiliations include: AICPA, Tennessee Society of CPAs, Texas Society of CPAs, AAMC, HFMA, NACUBO, TASSCUBO, AMGA, MGMA, ACHE and AACOM. Harman serves on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Health Related Institutions Formula Advisory Committee and has made presentations at NACUBO and MGMA national conferences.
Harman is a member of the Board of Directors for the Cliburn Foundation and also supports the UNTHSC Foundation.
